Other scoring issues

Howdy Guys, we've talked at great length amongst us here on the development team about the value of the scoring feature. As you know, the game engine we use (Unity) doesn't allow for objects to be partially in the scoring zone. So we settled on a somewhat compromised version of the FLL scoring.

We'll wait and see what other teams think. Perhaps, it is the case that we keep just the timer.

I did notice that we were missing triggers for the 'demolition challenge'. I will talk to my guys about fixing that.

    So, upon further investigation..

The reason why the scoring starts at zero is because the sim project file for the challenge has no way of accessing penalties for left over 'trash' blocks.

I was told by the development team that it would be difficult to evaluate the 'end game' state because these 'trash' blocks could end up being placed anywhere on the mat, making it difficult to assign scoring regions to keep track of this.

The best way to describe the sim's scoring system is that it 'approximates' points earned for successful challenge attempts.

Of course, the real life scoring of the game is much more complex and in some cases quite subjective based on how a particular judge rules on the play.

I'm not sure we'll ever be able to get to that point.

Missing scoring region for the 'Demolition' challenge has been added.

I will get an update out soon.

We read your responses. Given that the sim can only do approximate scoring, perhaps the scoring feature is not necessary (and probably more misleading for beginner teams if left as is).

It's definitely easier to rip it out.

Is there value still in keeping the timer?

As an experienced team, an approximate score is not needed. For a beginner team, an approx score following approx rules is misleading and will cause confusion when they go to a real event. We personally do not see the value of the sim as a scoring tool.

We do not think the timer is worth it because for the majority of teams, the time in base doing switches is a critical component. If we can't track that time in the sim, it probably isn't worth having. It is of use if whatever I do in a "first run with the robot" is saved - the time as well as the missions I completed....then get to load up another robot/attachments and then continue on.
